Hello and welcome to the Haiku Life Podcast, where we take a little exploration into some abbreviated moments. Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry. It is traditionally focused on nature and captures a fleeting moment within the space of three lines and a 5-7-5 syllable count. In a world so overwhelmingly immersive, a haiku is a moment of respite. These haiku are mine, moments of life, thoughts in the ether. Welcome to episode eleven Setting Seattle Earl Grey Latte Warmth Seagull a Light's Gothic Perch Northwest New Year Morn. It is often easier when travelling to Whistler in British Columbia, Canada, to fly into Seattle, rent a car and drive from there. We have done both over the years, flying to Vancouver and flying to Seattle. And this year we opted for the latter. On the last day of 2025, we drove down, crossed the border at the Linden Crossing, which was registering two hours faster than the Peace Arch. The weather is always hit and miss in Washington, regardless of what season it is. But I mentioned to Gordon that this might be the first time driving this route over the years that there was no rain. We stayed in a Marriott in the middle of the business district of Seattle. The last night of the year, cold, quiet, and dwarfed by massive vertical buildings rich in architectural interest and interpretation. Stylized intricate ornamentation, thick walls, rounded arches. It is a modern city with a very distinctly European feel, quite unusual in the States. We discovered the Vaughan's 1000 Spirits restaurant for our family New Year Eve dinner. It was just wonderful. The vegan sourdough pasta was an excellent carbo load into the new year. One of the things I do love when travelling is finding moments on my own in strange towns. I drank the best earl grey latte that I've ever had in the comfort and solitude of the hotel breakfast area, staring out at the swooping seagulls and looming edifices. It was damp and peaceful and a perfect place to feel grateful for a Northwest New Year morning. The haiku came pretty organically in the moment. Soon Gordon and the boys would appear, we would be airport and homeward bound, but for the moment there was just me and a latte starting a new year.
